Shoo Fly Pie Recipe

Serves 8

It's a delicious pie with a moist bottom, cake- like middle and crumb topping.


  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 3/4 cup water, boiling
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp ginger
  • 1/8 tsp cloves
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp shortening
  • 1 pie crust (9 inch), unbaked


1. Beat the egg yolk in a small bowl.
2. Blend in the molasses.
3. Add the boiling water with the soda dissolved in it.
4. Set aside.
5. Combine dry ingredients with shortening and work into crumbs with fingers.
6. Put liquid into pastry shell and top with crumbs.
7. Bake in a 400 degree oven for 10 minutes, then reduce heat to 325 degrees and bake 35 minutes longer.
