Farmhouse Pork and Apple Pie Recipe

Serves 10

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb bacon, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 3 medium onions, chopped
  • 3 lb boneless pork, cubed
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour, cooking
  • Oil (optional)
  • 3 tart cooking apples, peeled and chopped
  • 1 tsp rubbed sage
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1 cup apple cider
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 4 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 5 tbsp butter or margarine, devided
  • Additional salt and pepper
  • Snipped parsley (optional)



  • Instructions:

    1. Cook bacon in an oven-proof 12-inch skillet until crisp.
    2. Remove with a slotted spoon to paper towels to drain.
    3. In drippings, saute onions until tender; remove with a slotted spoon and set aside.
    4. Dust pork lightly with flour.
    5. Brown a third at a time in drippings, adding oil if needed.
    6. Remove from heat and drain.
    7. To pork, add bacon, onions, apples, sage, nutmeg, salt and pepper.
    8. Stir in cider and water.
    9. Cover and bake at 325 F for 2 hours or until pork is tender.
    10. In a sauce pan, cook potatoes in boiling water until tender.
    11. Drain and mash with milk and 3 tablespoons of butter.
    12. Add salt and pepper to taste.
    13. Remove skillet from oven and spread potatoes over pork mixture.
    14. Melt remaining butter; brush over potatoes.
    15. Broil 6 inches from heat for 5 minutes or until topping is browned.
    16. Sprinkle with parsley if desired.
