Gewurzplatzchen (Spice Cookies) Recipe

Makes 48 cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1 egg, large
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 1/2 cups flour, unbleached, unsifted
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ginger
  • 1/2 tsp cloves, ground
  • 1/2 tsp allspice, ground


Instructions:

1. Cream butter, shortening, and brown sugar thoroughly.
2. Blend in egg and molasses.
3. Sift together the remaining ingredients.
4. Stir into sugar mixture.
5. Shape dough into 3/4-inch balls.
6. Place 2 inches apart on greased baking sheets.
7. Flatten each ball with the bottom of a glass that has been greased and dipped into sugar.
8. Bake in preheated 350 F oven for 12 to 15 minutes.
9. Cool cookies on racks and store in airtight tins.
