Date and Orange Chutney Recipe

Makes 3 quarts

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb untreated oranges
  • 3 1/2 cup sugar
  • 7 tbsp golden syrup
  • 2 tbsp coarse salt
  • 1/4 tsp dried chilies, crushed
  • 6 3/4 cup malt vinegar
  • 1 lb onions, chopped
  • 1 lb dates, stoned and chopped
  • 1 lb raisins


  • Instructions:

    1. Grate the orange zest and set aside.
    2. Remove the pith from the oranges and discard the seeds.
    3. Finely chop the orange flesh.
    4. In a large, stainless steel saucepan, combine the sugar, syrup, salt, chilies, and vinegar.
    5. Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar.
    6. Add the oranges, onions, dates, raisins, and half the grated zest.
    7. Reduce the heat and simmer until thick, about 1 hour.
    8. Stir in the remaining orange zest.
    9. Spoon into warm, sterilized jars.
    10. Leave to cool, then seal.
    11. Store in a cool, dark place.
