Montana Sourdough Doughnuts Recipe

Makes 3 dozen

Ingredients:

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup sourdough starter
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tbsp oil or 1 tbsp lard, melted
  • 4 1/2 cups flour, sifted
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • Fat for frying


Instructions:

1. Beat eggs and sugar together.
2. Add starter, buttermilk, lard and sifted dry ingredients. Mix well.
3. Turn out dough and knead on a lightly floured board until smooth.
4. Roll to 1/2″ thickness and cut with a 2 3/4″ doughnut cutter.
5. Put on greased cookes sheet and let rise for 30 minutes.
6. Fry in hot deep fat (370 ) until golden brown and done.
7. Roll in sugar. Makes about 3 dozen.
